Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programmes
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one’s attention to the present moment, purposefully and without judgement. The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme is the most recognised and well-researched stress reduction programme worldwide. The course is a well-structured step-by-step process which heightens mindful awareness and reduces stress through a variety of meditation practices, body awareness, life skill presentations and discussion.
The MBSR is an 8-week programme, taught by certified trainers Denise Washkansky and Debbie Grusd. It consists of weekly group meetings (two hour classes), a full-day retreat, home practices and an individual consultation.
The demands of modern day life produce stress. When the body is exposed to stress for prolonged periods it becomes exhausted and depleted. Being mindful is a valuable way of assisting the body to gently return to optimal vitality.
The MBSR program can benefit a range of individuals; from professionals aiming to reduce work stress, to those suffering with chronic pain or illness, to those simply seeking a more balanced and peaceful lifestyle. Thirty years of research shows that mindfulness reduces stress, increases brain function, decreases pain and helps with anxiety and depression.
‘Mindfulness is awareness that emerges from … paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgement, to things as they actually are’ . Jon Kabat-Zinn
